CBSE has introduced significant changes in the examination format for Classes 11 and 12, with the aim of enhancing students’ competency in applying concepts to real-life scenarios.

Officials from CBSE, speaking to PTI, announced that starting from the 2024-25 session, the examination pattern for Classes 11 and 12 will include a higher percentage of competency-based questions. These questions will assess students’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations, in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

While there are significant alterations for Classes 11 and 12, CBSE clarified that there will be no modifications to the exam format for Classes 9 and 10, maintaining consistency across different grade levels.

The adjustment entails an increase in the percentage of competency-focused questions, such as multiple-choice questions (MCQs), case-based questions, and source-based integrated questions, from 40 to 50 percent. In contrast, the percentage of constructed response questions, including short and long answers, has been reduced from 40 to 30 percent.

Joseph Emanuel, Director (Academics) at CBSE, affirmed the board’s commitment to implementing Competency Based Education (CBE) in schools, as outlined in the NEP 2020.

He added, as per PTI, that the main emphasis of the board was to create an educational ecosystem that would move away from rote memorization and towards learning that is focused on developing the creative, critical, and systems thinking capacities of students to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
